AW’s 1938 route Day 3

AW’s 1938 route Day 3

Muker to Romaldkirk

22.25 miles – 2,648ft of ascent

Soon after leaving Muker AW passed Ramps Holme Bridge over which comes the 2008 Pennine Journey and which, from there to Keld, takes the same route close to the Swale. Just before Keld the Pennine Way comes in from the right and just across the Swale is the route of AW’s Coast to Coast Walk.

At Keld AW took to the B6270 leaving it soon for a 4 miles walk in the mist on the minor road to the Tan Hill Inn. After ‘an interesting hour’ there, he left for Sleightholme through which the 2008 route, which has been following the Pennine Way, passes. Very soon the routes diverge as the 2008 journey takes the Bowes loop of the Pennine Way to Bowes whereas AW continued along the lane into Bowes.

After visiting the ‘remarkable ruin’ of Bowes Castle he still had 10 miles to go to his planned destination of Middleton when he left at five o’clock – a destination he realised was ‘unlikely’. A minor road north took him through Cotherstone and into Romaldkirk where he found accommodation at the Kirk Inn.
