AW’s 1938 route Day 1

AW’s 1938 route Day 1

Settle to Buckden

17.5 miles – 2,982ft of ascent

AW ‘left Settle just after noon on Sunday, 24th September’ 1938, heading north up the Ribble valley along the road to Horton in Ribblesdale. It was not long before the hills started to feature – on the right the slopes of Penyghent and on the left those of Ingleborough. He soon arrived at Langcliffe, after an hour had reached Stainforth and a further hour later came to Horton in Ribblesdale – a place that was to feature in his Pennine Way Companion.

It is from Horton that the 2008 Pennine Journey shares the route of the 1938 Pennine Journey for the next nine miles as well as, for the next 1½ miles, the Pennine Way. Here AW forsook the road and took a green lane leading to Foxup Moor and passing the ‘deep chasm‘ of Hull Pot.

A damp stretch around Foxup Moor was encountered before reaching Littondale at Halton Gill from where the route climbed to the top of the Horse Head Pass and dropped down to Langstrothdale. Here AW’s route was along the road past Hubberholme to Buckden but the 2008 route takes the more scenic Dales Way into Buckden. It can afford to take the slightly longer route as this stage is 12.75 miles compared to AW’s 17.5 miles with a noon start!
