After walking up the High Street passing the Low and High Crosses this stage continues the journey’s progress down the Eden valley. The route passes the 17th Century almshouses built by Lady Anne Clifford and soon after, Primrose Stone, one of the 10 Millennium Eden Benchmarks.
After a lovely riverside walk it departs from the river for a while but then returns to pass by the picturesque St. Theobald’s Church at Great Musgrave. Soon the ruins of Brough Castle built on the site of a Roman fort come into view. This was one of a few belonging to the Clifford family that Lady Anne rebuilt.
From Church Brough the route heads basically south. There is a short stretch by the banks of the River Belah through Kaber and Winton before rejoining the Eden for the final ¾ mile to Kirkby Stephen. At Frank’s Bridge it joins AW’s Coast to Coast Walk.
