Horton, as well as being the focal point of the renowned Three Peaks Walk, is one of the leading pot holing centres in the UK. Today’s stage goes past Hull Pot – the largest hole in the country – from where there is a fine view of Penyghent. The path contours around the lower slopes, usually in damp conditions, as it makes its way from Ribblesdale to Foxup in Littondale.
From Halton Gill there is an ascent of the Horse Head Pass before dropping down to Raisgill in Langstrothdale. At Yockenthwaite the route joins the Dales Way (which will be met later in the journey) for a delightful stretch along the infant River Wharfe. It passes through the lovely hamlet of Hubberholme, with the George Inn on one side of the river and the church opposite, to arrive at Buckden.
